America

Tomorrow is Independence Day.  I'm sure you already know this.  I didn't mean that to be a newsflash, just an introduction.

Tomorrow is the day we're supposed to be celebrating our nation.

As of late, i've gotten the distinct feeling that we, as a people, have gotten way too far away from our roots, as it were.

So, i'm here to remind us of a few of our roots.  I hope you enjoy.

A friend sent me this email some time ago, and i saved it.  From this video, i got my inspiration for this post.

You know those songs we sing?  Or maybe we just used to sing them.  The Star Spangled Banner, America, the Beautiful, America, My Country 'tis of Thee, The Battle Hymn of the Republic (did you even know that was the name of this song?).  Most of the verses of these songs, most of us don't know.  So, i'm going to highlight some of the lesser known lyrics for you.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

America! America! God shed His grace on thee...
America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw...
America! America! May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev'ry gain divine!

Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of Liberty,
To thee we sing,
Long may our land be bright
With Freedom's holy light,
Protect us by thy might
Great God, our King.

Really, this one is pretty blatantly God-honoring, but this particular verse is special.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

No matter what anyone has to say about it, we must know and recognize that we would not be a nation, nor a nation as blessed as we are, if it were not for the blessing and intervention of almighty God.  That's truth, plain and simple.  I hope you'll take this day to pray for our country and to thank God for His mercy and to ask HIM to change this country so that our society will remember HIM again.

In case you've forgotten this one.

I pledge allegiance to the flag
Of the United States of America
And to the Republic, for which it stands
One Nation, UNDER GOD,
Indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for All.
